DropCap not working :(

New Here ,
Jan 17, 2025 Jan 17, 2025

Hello, can anyone tell me why my DropCap acts like this?

(Please see picture attached)

I can't find anything online. It's very frustrating.

Thank you so much!

Yes, seeing your settings for the style is a first step. But also — is that a layout for print? It looks as if it may be a digital layout or an export to a digital format. If so, which format and what are you using to view it?

It kinda looks like it's using a Character Style that has a negative Baseline Shift.

Yeah, I think the full scope of the question is —

  • Is this a print layout we're looking at (and not a digital export)?
  • Show the Drop Cap menu for that paragraph's style.
  • Does the DC setup apply a Character Style? If so, show that setup as well.
  • Are there any spot formats or overrides applied anywhere in that paragraph? (turn on override highlight to make sure).

I agree there might be a baseline shift applied. In fact it might be applied to the whole paragraph as the first baseline is suspiciously low, even without the drop cap issue.

Also what are your text box's baseline settings?

if you can upload a sample file with a small sample of this text, we can suss it out.

Can you check your Paragraph Styles to see if something is set as a Character Style for Drop Caps?

Okay.... not sure if this accurately represents your work file, but it has all of the drop cap features applied as overrides, which is not a good approach, to [Basic Paragraph]., which is a built-in style that kinda sorta should not be used at all, directly or as a basis for other styles.

Your baseline settings, as shown in menu snips above, is also a bit strange as Fixed/zero.

I could not get your style to maintain changes but I was successful in getting a normal drop cap with —

  • Set Text Frame Options | Baseline Options to Ascent, not Fixed. (The Fixed setting brings a number of layout quirks with it and is for special situations, in my experience.) That alone made the drop cap act normally.
  • Create a new, specific style based on your body-text style or on "no previous style" instead of using [Basic Paragraph].
  • Set the drop cap as you had it — 3 lines, 1 character.

You should get this:

JamesGiffordNitroPress_0-1737154131760.pngexpand image

ETA: All of which is faulty layout, but the actual problem is caused by setting all text to subscript, as @jmlevy noticed.

NM. Besides the baseline shift, I think that's it.

In any event, subscript is not applied in the sample file

Are you sure, @James Gifford—NitroPress ?

Actually, subscript is applied in the sample file (or maybe, my English translation is wrong)

And once it's removed:

No, you had it right, I posted too quickly. All corrected. That's exactly it.

Although the Fixed/zero baseline is what's causing contrary issues and should be changed as well.
