eBook | EPUB | Image | Unintended Page Break | How to Fix?

I wrote a book via InDesign. The print book is OK. Now I'm exporting the book to create an EPUB file for an eBook. The inevitable bugs are being worked out slowly but surely. I'm viewing the preliminary results of the eBook via Kindle Previewer 3.

I incorprated a publisher's logo on the bottom of my book's title page. The logo exists as a JPEG file, and I put it on the page successfully via File > Place. Following EPUB file generation, the text and graphics of the title page are maintained including the logo, but the logo, which is anchored to the title page's botom text, gets situated on the next/separate page in Kindle Previewer 3. I've tried every available Object > Object Export Options... selection without effect. The logo continues to reside on the next/separate page on its own where everything should be consolidated on one page. How do I get the logo to remain on the title page with all of the other title page items?

Additional Notes:

(1) The title page is its own separate InDesign document and it features no page breaks.

(2) I tried saving the logo as a PNG file to no avail.

(3) For more troubleshooting steps, I anchored the logo to text near the top of the page, and also tried placing the logo in the middle of the title page in a nonsensical location. It still gets place on the next/separate page.

(4) Unanchoring (i.e., releasing the object) makes no difference.

If you didn't, try making everything MUCH shorter — squash it all into the top half of the layout page. I would be very surprised if the problem remains; this a common problem, especially for layouts like title pages where there is widely spaced text with a graphic at the bottom. You may simply not be closing up the stack enough. (And if that works, slowly expand the spacing until you have the logo as far down the page as it will go and not break to the next page.)

You can't (usually) put text or graphics right at the bottom page margin and have them export to EPUB/Kindle without breaking over to the next page. There are, after all, no pages in reflowable e-books; it's up to the reader to break things into chunks, one screen at a time, and each reader and each software update has its own micro-algorithms about determining where to make these breaks. A title page stack in particular seems to trigger extra "help" in spreading the content out, especially if you expect to get a print-page look with the logo right at the bottom.

The only two (common) things that cause this break-over is a keep-with pulling the logo to the next page, or too tall of a page stack making the reader push it over. If you're sure the first is not involved, the solution is to shorten things up until the reader is happy. (And then, the break will reappear with the first human reader who expands the layout settings...)

Derek:  OK. I will ultimately check the eBook with the multiple-eBook-reader SW you suggested in an earlier post (I think it begins with a "D").

James:  This is valuable insight. I must have spent 4-5 hours on this issue alone. I've never read an eBook on an eReader before (Kindle, etc.) so I guess that is part of my problem and lack of awareness. (I only read paper books.) My book will be provided in both print and eBook versions (two ISBNs) since I know that many people have no issues with eBooks; the market demands it. Thanks again!

Shorten the total height of the title page contents (which I assume is mostly spacing). EPUB readers including Kindle Previewer are a bit aggressive about breaking graphics at the bottom of a page to the next one, even if there is apparently enough space.

Also, make certain that the paragraphs supporting the graphic (usually just the anchor paragraph, but check all on the page) don't have a "keep with next" setting that is pulling that paragraph and its attachment forward to fulfill the keep-with requirement. (And don't overlook the minor UI bug here: make sure "keep with next n lines" is set to zero!)

James:

(1) OK. I will try reducing the sizes of the items above. Stay tuned.

(2) If you're referring to Paragraph Style Options > Keep Options, Keep with Previous in unchecked, and Keep with Next reflects 0 lines.

James: I tried reducing the size of everything but the problem persists. Thanks for the suggestions. I think I will replace the logo with text (the publisher's name only) and resign with that.

What happens if you put a line under the logo and make the line transparent (just a thought)?

Derek:  Thank you. The line gets shifted to the next/separate page along with the logo.
