Hi all, please am in a deep issue right now and am trying to avoind going over creating a new document from the start. I am using Indesign 19.1 and I completed a book layout two days ago which i converted to reflowable epub successfully. After the epub was reviewed and discovered there was need to make a few changes to the paragraph styles regarding spacing, whenever i open the file and try to edit any major heading paragraph style, once i make the changed on the dialogue box, my indesign hooks like its busy and then finally crash. This does not happen with the non-heading paragraph styles.
This is very very frustrating for me and i can't start recreating a new file, even if i try to, am sure that if i copy to paste from old file to new file, it will also copy along the paragraph styles and that will bring me again into the same mess.
Please, help. This is urgent and frustrating.

First, try to update to the latest version - InDesign 19.3 - and see if it makes a difference. If not, let us know your operating system version. Also, try to export the doc as IDML then open IDML and see if it solves the problem.

The thing is - I know you are changing the Paragraph Style - but the crash is probably not related to that style at all.
I'd start by creating a new document with same page size and margins etc.
and have the old doc open.
In the old doc - go to the pages panel sub menu - and then choose Move Pages - with all the pages selected your old document you can set the target to the New Document
This will insert all your pages to the new document - and in essence rebuild it.
See if it crashes here.
If it does - you have a test document to work with now.
So you can start deleteing half the content - see if it crashes
If it still crashes - then delete more content - see if it crashes
then keep halving the document content to see what is crashing it
it doens't take long to track down the page/content that is crashing
--------------
On another note - it might not be that
Here are some presaved thoughts on fixing crashes in order of which to try
----
If a document is not behaving well then try
File>Export
Choose IDML
Open the IDML in InDesign
Save the file as a new InDesign file with a new name
See if the issue persists.
---
Try resetting your preferences:
Windows: Start InDesign, and then press Shift+Ctrl+Alt. Click Yes when asked if you want to delete preference files.
macOS: While pressing Shift+Option+Command+Control, start InDesign. Click Yes when asked if you want to delete preference files.
A dialog will appear asking to delete the InDesign Preferences, select 'Yes' on this dialog.

Reinstalling rarely fixes everything - you can do a complete reinstall using the
