Editing Font Size in Table of Contents

Hi: I'm trying to format my TOC. My chapters have the word "Chapter" in a smaller font than the one used for the number. I don't want that font size difference to appear in the TOC. I've set the font size for the TOC List (what I've named each TOC entry) for 11, but the number still comes in as it is formatted at the beginning of the chapter. Can I override the larger font size? If so, how? Thank you!

Do your actual chapter headings have character styles (or overrides) applied? ID's TOC feature will pick up any such modifications.

Hi - I don't see overrides, but the chapter number does have a character style applied to it. The word "Chapter" does not.

There ya have it. For good or bad, mostly bad, ID TOCs pick up all formatting of the target elements. It can be difficult to get a clear/clean TOC listing when character styles etc. are used.

As Brad notes, change these to a Nested Style and the problem will go away, as the TOC will only see the base text and not the style's self-applied overrides.

How are you defining the difference in sizes? Are you using Character Styles for the word Chapter or the number? Try use a Nested Style instead.

Hi - the chapter number has a character style. The word "chapter" does not.
