Warum kann man im Wörterbuch keine einfachen französischen Anführungszeichen einstellen?

Danke.

Which Adobe application are you using? We will be happy to move your post from Creative Cloud desktop to the proper forum for you. Each application has its own dictionary.

InDesign 20.5 – Mac Studio Sequoia 15.6.1

Diese einfachen französischen Anführungszeichen waren wahrscheinlich noch nicht in dem Menü.

Try this from InDesign Help:

Use quotation marks

You can specify different quotation marks for different languages. These quotation mark characters appear automatically during typing if the Use Typographer’s Quotes option is selected in the Type section of the Preferences dialog box.

Specify which quotation marks to use

  1. Choose Edit > Preferences > Dictionary (Windows) or InDesign > Preferences > Dictionary (Mac OS).
  2. Choose a language from the Language menu.
  3. Do any of the following, and then click OK:
    • For Double Quotes, select a pair of quotation marks, or type the pair of characters you want to use.

    • For Single Quotes, select a pair of quotation marks, or type the pair of characters you want to use.

    Details here:

    https://helpx.adobe.com/indesign/using/glyphs-special-characters.html

Why can't you put single French quotation marks in the dictionary?

the ones I need (1st arrow to the right and 2nd arrow to the left) are not in the list in German.

By @xaverr26601882

Your first post said "French" while your second post says "German". Realizing that I know little about this, I looked it up and see that French and German guillemets are not the same. If this is true, do you want me to change your subject to "German"?

https://type.today/en/journal/quotes

"Guillemets « » are used in Russian, French, German, Italian, and numerous other languages. In Russian, French, Italian, Swiss German and other traditions, the guillemets are pointing outwards, like this: « », while in Germany these marks are pointing inwards: » «."

So which ones exactly are the ones you're looking for?

Both your screenshot (German) and @jmlevy's screenshot (French) show identical sets of quotes:

And it's the same in English for what it's worth:

@xaverr26601882

  • If the German guillemets are available in InDesign, someone here will assist.
  • If they are not, then you need to put in a feature request to Adobe. The InDesign team does not use the Community Forums as many other teams do. They are still using a separate site called UserVoice. Here is the link:

Actually, I've just realized that you can just type whatever you want manually:

Due to the extremely poor UI design of combo boxes in InDesign, it's not immediately clear to the user that manual text entry is possible, as the text field doesn't look like an editable field. This problem has been periodically brought to Adobe's attention for years by now.

LATEST

Erstens, wlches Deutsch? Da gibt es viele DE für AT, DE oder CH, Pre-reform, 1996 und 2006.

Zweitens, bei mir sind die drinnen. Je nach Version sind diese ›‹ oder ‹› richtig.

Dritens, du kannst jede Glyphe reinschreiben.

assuming indesign....

in the future, to find the best place to post your message, use the list here, https://community.adobe.com/

p.s. i don't think the adobe website, and forums in particular, are easy to navigate, so don't spend a lot of time searching that forum list. do your best and we'll move the post (like this one has already been moved) if it helps you get responses.

Hi @xaverr26601882

What I see in my French InDesign version:

Capture d’écran 2025-08-28 à 17.29.19.png

I am curious: why would you need other single quotes, knowing that they are very rarely used? In French, the only use I see for them is when you need to write the name of a variety of a plant…
