Question

Endnote in multiple places

Hi there,

A document I have imported from Word uses multiple references to the same endnote. They all imported just fine but now the client wants to move sentence around and the endnotes want to re-number but the problem is that the duplicated references don't re-number and end up referencing to the wrong endnote because of the re-numbering. Does anyone have a solution for this? The client wants to retain the interactive clicking to jump to the references. If the endnotes are converted to static characters the links to the endnotes are all lost. Anyone have any suggestions to fix this? I have a vague recollection of using cross referencing before the endnotes features was introduced, is this the only way to have multiple references to the same endnote?

TIA

You can't create cross-references to foot- and endnotes (unfortunately), but you can add a text anchor to a note and create a cross-reference to the anchor. It's a bit of a fragile system because you can refer only to the anchor's name. So when you add or remove a note you'll have to rename its anchor.

It's a little hard to know without seeing the file and the setup.

Can you give an example?
