Endnotes and Footnotes Greyed Out...

Community Beginner ,

I was able to enter 7 Endnotes. Then, no matter what I do (including deleting InDesign Preferences on startup), I cannot get Endnotes to activate. Both Endnotes and Footnotes appear greyed out. Anyone have any suggestions or ideas please? Thanks.

Sorry for a stupid question - but do you have cursor in text?

Or are you trying to add Footnote / Endnote in the auto generated TOC?

Hi Robert -
Thanks for responding. It is a good question. I have a cursor in text, located at the spot where I want to insert the superscript Endnote (automatically numbered). Everything worked fine for 7 Endnotes, but then the functions disappeared as per the screenshot attached above.

Hi Again Robert -
The TOC you see under the screenshot was typed in by hand (I plan to replace it with the auto generated TOC later). This document has two TOCs. The Endnotes disappeared as soon as I tried to place them in the second section of the text. The text is threaded from beginning to end; all that changes from one section to the next is the Parent Page.
