Question

Export PDF taking long time

Dear experts,

I have an InDesign document with 600 math images (equations) in PDF format. When I export PDF it takes around 12-15 mins. Whereas if I would convert the math images to eps format the document takes 12-15 secs for PDF creation. Is there any technical reason behind this?

Augustine

Hi Augustinek001,

could you check with Acrobat what application is the creator of the PDFs?

In Acrobat go to:

File > Properties > Description

Description:

Application:

Advanced:

PDF Producer:

PDF Version:

You could also post a PDF file so that we can have a look.

Thanks,
Uwe Laubender

Hi Luke,

Sorry for the delayed response. We are using PDFtex for converting to PDF. Actually those math equations.

You may see a speed increase by saving your PDFs as PDF/X-1a in Acrobat (File> Save as other> Press-ready PDF), this may simplify your PDFs. This can be done in Acrobat with an Action.

Can you upload one of the PDFs, so we can have a look?

How did you convert to .eps? If you saved the vector PDFs as .eps images, this may explain the speed increase. What is the size of the InDesign file? Did the InDesign file size change when you used .eps links?

Open a few of the PDFs in Acrobat and go to File> Save as other> Optimized PDF and click on the Audit space usage button, this may give you a clue about what is contained in the PDFs. You can probably see a speed increase by optimizing your PDFs. Try selecting all of the last 3 options- Discard Objects, Discard User Data and Clean Up. Make a copy of the PDFs first.  Use the Acrobat Action Wizard to apply the action to a folder of files.

Hi Luke,

Thanks for your response. We have used ghostcript to convert PDF to eps. I have tried the way you recommeded to resize PDF through Acrobat but no luck.
