Exported EPUB from Indesign. Now I wanna change a few chapter names...

So the TOC that you can navigate inside the EPUB exported from ID takes directly from the file names (which are slightly different from chapter names, for tracking/filing purposes) which of course is terrible inside the EPUB. Any solutions to changiung the chapter titles in the EPUB without chaging the names to the files themselvs and reloading those into the .indb, and all the work that would have to follow? Thanks for any answers!

Just to clarify, to get the results you want, you're going to have to change something. I recommend changing the overall structure of your doc and/or export, rather than hacking at the exported document.

 

There is almost never a good reason to use component file names for a TOC. Switching to the more standard Chapter Title method would allow you to use conditional text, if necessary, to get two different document results.

Don't regard an EPUB as anything but a disposable export, like a PDF or a printed copy of a memo. We don't edit PDFs and PS files any more, and we don't use Wite-Out and retype pages any more.

 

Fix the fault, re-export the EPUB.

 

That said, it kind of sounds like you want ot have your cake and nibble on it, too. If the chapter names are inviolable for reason A, wanting to change them in the TOC for reason B is suspect.

 

Just change the Chapter Titles, using conditional text to be able to swap from A to B if necessary, and regenerate the EPUB from there. File names should be irrelevant to EPUB generation, as creating TOCs from file names is a crude technique more suited to reports and manuals than anything else. If the file names are more important than the chapter titles, just change the latter to match.

 

But yes, you can always edit the EPUB after creation, which is an antiquated and deprecated practice and (among other things) has to be manually repeated each time you generate a new instance. So, recommended option above.
