Hi, whenever I open my indesign file it crashes indesign. I have tried to open it on multiple devices but the problem still occurs. I also mistakenly stored the file on a memory stick. This might be one of the causes of the problem. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1VJk_eikUpRWZnEFTImo4ohTlMUo5ZZGK/view?usp=sharing
Thats the file there.

Hi,
What version of InDesign? Is it 13.0.1(the latest)?
Which OS?
Did you try to trash both cache and preferences and then restarting InDesign?Troubleshooting 101: Replace, or "trash" your InDesign preferences

Hi,
Do you have a .idml version of the file? Or did you create a package folder ever (that should have the .idml file)?

Hi Miles,
just tried to open your CC 2017 12.1.0.568 document with CC 2018 13.0.1.207:
Error Code 4
The file is damaged.
Tried to open it with CC 2017.1:
Message about 18 missing links.
Then InDesign crashed.
Had to delete my preferences to start CC 2017.1 again.
I could not open your IDML file.
Not with CC 2017.1, not with CC 2018 13.0.1.207.
I'm on Mac OSX 10.11.6 (German).
FWIW: What I did is to read out all available save states with a script by Werner Perplies.
The result:
Windows, 6.2 - InDesign-Version: CC2014.0.0(70) - Version: 10.0.0.70

Hi Uwe,
I wonder what is the script you mentioned. Is it available somewhere online? I found Werner Perplies' site but couldn't find this script.

Hi Kas,
no problem; here you go:
WpsIndFileIdentifier - Skript - Adobe® InDesign® Automatisierung
Before you can download it you have to register and then sign in.
In German "Registrieren" and then: "Anmelden".

Uwe

Thanks, Uwe!
It doesn't like my yahoo and gmail e-mails for some reason. Had to use my work email to register instead.

Sorry for that, Miles.
Do you know or do you have an idea how it was damaged?
Just out of curiosity: How did you export a damaged IDML file?

Uwe

A last ditch effort is to use Markzware file conversion service. Sometimes you can convert an InDesign files to QuarkXPress and then back to InDesign. There website specifically mentions Error code 4.
Depending on the work required to rebuild or update the file, it might be worth it.

I’m guessing it was because I transferred the file between multiple computers and then onto a bad memory stick.
