File links are broken when linking to OneDrive between a PC and Mac

We use OneDrive to store and share files in our organisation.

I have my OneDrive folder set up within Macintosh HD / Users / OneDrive, so the file path is the same if I share with other Macs. However, if I share with a PC this becomes problematic because a PC's OneDrive path will never be the same as this.

I can't change my Mac's OneDrive path to an earlier root folder than the above. So whenever my colleague on a PC opens my Indesign files, the links will always be broken.

Does anyone know a way around this?

Hi @defaulte0bjwipyja3r,

Isn't this the expected behaviour. I mean paths on MAC will never replicate the path on a PC and hence we are bound to see the missing links. Won't packaging the files work for your workflow? Or maybe you could try using a shared network drive so that the path remains consistent on both the systems.

You could work with a structure like that:

Folder that contains all relevant assets.

Folder > InDesign document file

Folder > Links folder with all placed and linked graphics and images

Folder > Document fonts folder with all needed and used font files

The one thing that could happen with this structure is that when you open an InDesign document you have to update the links. I practiced this with some of my clients on Dropbox. They on Mac OS, me on Windows 10. It should also work with OneDrive. Provided a feature like Smart Sync for Dropbox is turned off.
