Please help.  Self-taught novice on InDesign... I create a box, file + place to put an image in it.  If I decide on a different image, I used to be able to just select the box again, file + place to replace the image.  It won't do that anymore!  I can't find the answer anywhere.  There are no layers, nothing fancy, just a jpeg over another jpeg.

Can you post some screenshots?

And what platform, OS and InDesign versions?

If you're on Windows 11 - there is a problem with recent updates - they need to be uninstalled or repaired.

Here's a random example:  Just some regular boxes that I have put pictures and images in like this:

Then I selected the box with the girl and the cake to replace her with another picture.  Even though I have selected the box, it gives me a new giant box with the new image and doesn't do anything to the original like this.

I'm on Windows 11, InDesign version 20.1.  You say I need to uninstall and re-install InDesign because of a problem?

Thank you - I tried to follow all the threads from your link.  I have auto update on the InDesign - don't know how to "roll it back" and I bought this laptop with Windows 11 so it's not an update issue going from Windows 10 to 11.

It's about recent updates to Win 11 itself.

Hi Susan:

There is a checkbox at the bottom of the Place dialog box that is on as a default, telling InDesign to Replace Selected Item. Did yours get inadvertently deselected?
