Finder window (Save As/Export, etc) show up in light color even though the system/app theme is dark

I know its not a huge issue but as a designer its a little irritating. When running under the darkest theme in Illustrator and Indesign the open, save, export, and place dialogues are all in light themes even with the OS in Dark mode. All of the dialouges in Photoshop however show up dark.

In After Effects this command line in terminal fix this issue:

defaults write com.adobe.AfterEffects NSRequiresAquaSystemAppearance -bool false

Update: Found it!

In the Composition panel press cmd+F12 for mac or Ctrl+F12 for windows to open the Console panel.

Push the three little lines button to the right of the text and select Debug Database View.
In the search area type "dark" and check the true box under "AE.SupportsDarkModeR"

You can take off your sunglasses now 😉

I've just moved into a new computer, and still in 2024, InDesign is unable to follow OS theme. The Terminal command works just as well as last time, though. Thanks again.

Thank you for this solution! BTW it is April 2024 and the issue of light Finder windows in indesign 19.3 was still not fixed.

It honestly can't be that difficult to implement as its already done for PS.

It ALOT of things like this that show that Adobe are lazy - and too busy adding expanding rather than fixing the programs they have.

I find this issue very intruiging honestly, the simple fact that they think its a user setting issue or something like that. But Ironcialy sometime during all of this they implemented the option to change the Adobe Cloud app to dark mode so theres that.

The question was asked in April 2020. We are at the end of September 2023 and the problem still persists. The solution given by Christopher-James works great. Meanwhile, Adobe still hasn't fixed the bug. Shame.

That is the save as dialogue and the export dialogue UI. Normally on a Mac, the standard save file location navigator UI matches the system's dark mode settings. The only time this has contradicted in my lifetime has been on Adobe InDesign. It forces the file navigator in light mode. For context, this is how it should look — this was achieved using a terminal "hack" to fix the problem.
