If I place an image in a graphic frame (part of master page) then "Fit Content to Frame," does it auto-scale it proportionately?

If you drag place an image as you place it, it will scale proportionally.

The problem is that the frame you are trying to use is on the master. It may not have the same proportions as your image. Your choices are:

  • Use the frame as is and crop the image.
  • Resize the frame width or height or both

If the image and frame don't match, then distorting the image to fit is never a good choice!

Once you tell us which choice works, we can assist further.

Fit Content to Frame usually distorts the image. The exception would be if they already had the same ratio. Don't use it. Use anything else!

If you want it to be proportionate use the option called "Fit Content Proportionately".

Hi Parny:

I recommend either Fit Content Proportionally, or Fill Frame Proportionally—both maintain the original aspect ration of the image. If you don't see the word "Proportionally" in the description, don't use it!

Barb, if I place the image at 100%, say, somewhere outside the document pages then resize the filled graphic frame before moving to its location on a page, does this scale it proportionately? ~ Lisa

Please ignore my question just now. I tried it and see it doesn't work like that.

Jane-e, thank you! I reviewed a similar file the client provided and see a blank master, including bleed, was used for the pages with images. I'm going to place the images and try to adjust proportionately. ~ Lisa
