Fixed Layout ePUB - hyperlinks not working

New Here ,
Apr 04, 2018 Apr 04, 2018

Hi guys!

I am preparing a book for iBooks, trying to export it as a fixed layout ePUB.

I have a designed Table of Contents and I linked the titles of the chapters with hyperlinks to the eight chapters and other sections.

When I export it to epub I get this message:

External Text Anchor not found: 39

Text Anchor in "/file address/" is missing: 39

(repeated 14 times with all the file addresses for each chapter file and the text anchor's number)

If I export it to an interactive PDF it works, and I can navigate through it, just he ePUB fails.

I used Anchor Texts in the beginning of each chapter, and used Hyperlinks to direct them.

I am using inDesign CC 13.1 in a Mac with High Sierra.

Which version of InDesign are you using, and are your chapters set up as individual files or is the publication one single INDD file with all the chapters in the same file, one after the other?

If your INDD files are individual docs, the proper way to set this up is to collect them inside an InDesign Book file (File > New >Book), which makes an INDB file, and then you export the *book* to EPUB  via the Book panel menu.

Also, in order to get a properly linked TOC, whether your book is one single file or it's a collection inside an InDesign Book, is to use the automatic Table of Contents feature (Layout > Table of Contents), and be sure to turn on the Make Text Anchor in Source Paragraph option there (and turn on Include Book Documents if this doc is part of an InDesign Book). This TOC, when placed in your document, will automatically be linked to the chapter starts in both reflowable and fixed-layout EPUBs.
