Question

Font changes when importing images with transparent background.

Hello, I am using the latest version of InDesign (18.3) and I am trying to import an image with a transparent background (.png). As soon as I do this, the font on this page changes. All other pages of the booklet are not affected.
Even if I use e.g. Photoshop or GIMP to convert the file as .psd, .pdf, .tiff, .gif or .bmp, the same error occurs.
The error also occurs when I create a completely new Indesign file and import an image with a transparent background.

This problem does not occur with .jpeg files.
The font does not change either, it is just displayed differently.

How can I fix this error?
I am sorry if the question is stupid, because I am still quite inexperienced with Indesign.

  1. Avoid PNG in InDesign as it is a web format and it supports only alpha transparency.
  2. JPG does not support transparency.
  3. Do you work with layers? You should do so.
  4. Does the transparent part of the PNG overlap text. Take care that the text is in alayer above and not in a layer under the transparent graphic.

Your PNG image would be RGB - set your transparency blend space to RGB

Edit>Transparency Blend Space

If it's for online this might resolute the issue for you.

If it's for print - don't use PNG and save as PSD and use CMYK and set your transparency blend space to CMYK.

See if it helps

Outlining of type is a common problem with transparency flattening, which makes it appear bolder. You can often eliminate this by being sure the type is above any transparency on the page.
