Footnote insert not using footnote text

I have lots of footnotes (sadly). I am reprinting old, out-of-print books. I insert the footnote. Shouldn't it use the footnote text automatically? It makes my life that much harder; then, of course, I need to remove some gap lines, etc. Any help, and I will bless you...

It should use whatever paragraph style you have assigned it in Type | Document Footnote Options:
You will want to create and define a 'Footnote' style, or similar name, to use here.
The two panes of this menu define everything about how footnotes appear in the document.
