FR: How to Disable "Learn More" Pop-Ups in InDesign

Community Beginner ,
Oct 08, 2024 Oct 08, 2024

After a recent update, my InDesign is now showing all these stupid pop-ups the whole time.

Screenshot attached.  To be absolutely clear, I am talking about the entire dialogue box, not the tool-tip illustrateed in a section of the dialogue box shown.

How do I kill them off once and for all ?  I've looked through Preferences but canot spot anything obvious.

Hi Everyone,

Thank you all for sharing your feedback and concerns about the "Learn More" pop-ups in InDesign. I completely understand how disruptive these can be, and it's clear they are causing frustration for many of you.

While these pop-ups aren’t technically a bug, we do recognize that they can be an inconvenience for some users. We’re looking into ways to improve this experience and are considering options that would allow you more control-such as the ability to disable them permanently i

Hi everyone,

I wanted to share an update on this issue after following up with the product team. They’ve acknowledged the feedback and confirmed that many onboarding prompts and pop-ups will be removed in the upcoming InDesign 20.3 update, scheduled for release in April.

I’ve specifically raised the concern about the "Learn More" pop-up that appears after updates, installation, or resetting preferences, as this has been a recurring frustration for many of you. The team is checking the status o

Ok, we are currently at version 20.5. Has anything been done? I still see black and blue pop-ups on a daily basis.

Hi @gekgenoeg,

Thanks for sharing your update. I understand how disruptive these pop-ups can be. Could you please confirm the version of InDesign you are on right now and share a couple of screenshots of the pop-ups you are still seeing? That will help me check them with the product team.

The team has been working release by release to remove many of these prompts, and I'm also checking internally if there are plans to introduce an option to disable them altogether. I'll keep this thread updated as soon as I have more information.

Looking forward to your reply.

Abhishek

@Abhishek Rao

Here's a screenshot fresh of the InDesign version 20.5. As you can see, it covers the style and color palettes. And this is just one example of these disruptive pop-ups.

Here's what version we are on, and we are still getting the popups. I sent you a message with several of them. Some of them don't come up all the time, but the still do come up repeatedly.

I'm personally tired of waiting for Adobe to listen, and I'm directing everyone who asks over to other industry standard programs where the developers are actively listening to the users.

Here's another one I get frequently — an empty popup, with no way to get rid of it.

It looks like the popup isn't empty but it gets filled with black. I wonder if toggling GPU Performance can solve it? Also, are you on the latest InDesign, and what macOS version?

If you look up a few in this same convo, you'll see a screenshot of my INDD version, which is the latest: 20.5 (according to the Creative Cloud app). I'm on the latest macOS, as well, Sequoia 15.6.1 (24G90).

That's correct. Turning it off (or, in other cases, on) can fix certain display issues in InDesign. But it might as well not make any difference.

The History pop-up (my favourite), which always appears unexpectedly and blocks ongoing activity, is a perfect Adobe trap that must have been invented by someone extremely "forward-thinking" and "clever".

To tell you true, I was expecting a Preference switch in 20.3 about the pop-ups, but I don't see one.

Also, I am still seeing pop-ups. Am I to expect to silence each of them at least once?

I would prefer a preference switch like the video tooltips. Helpful for the newbie, but I can turn it off in preferences.

Yes, that would be the only sensible solution. That's what everyone's been saying over and over again. But there's somebody at the top of Adobe who's obsessed with these popups. He thinks popups will increase profits by at least 50%. So when the question of whether to add a checkbox to the settings was decided at the meeting, he definitely forbade it. He thinks the solution is to keep the popups even if they were to lose most of their old customers. He said popups will attract more new ones.

I've found a fairly simple solution to this nightmare. It comes in the form of a startup script that selects your custom Workspace everytime ID boots up. When this happens, ID doesn't think you're new and so you won't see them anymore. But you havbe to set up a custom Workspace, which you should anyway, for this to work:

For me, the context bar has been useless at best, but more often it is simply in my way. It frequently covers the image or text that I am working on, making it difficult to see and edit my work. This obstruction disrupts my creative process and hinders productivity. At least the context bar can be turned off, which is a relief.

Now in InDesign, every time I click on an image, a popup tutorial video about how to use the new text-to-image AI feature appears from the context bar This video covers about a third of my screen and whatever image I have selected. This is extremely frustrating as it prevents me from continuing with my project without first closing the video.

I strongly believe that these popups—whether advertisements or tutorials—should not interfere with the workspace. I hope this does not become a common practice, as it greatly impacts the user experience.
