No, it's not normal. Try quitting InDesign and resetting your preferences. What is your OS and version and what is the exact version of InDesign?
I'll move this from “Get Started” to “InDesign".

Apple updates their video drivers through "Software Updates" in the App Store. (Windows users need to do their own updates.) I had a long discussion a few months ago with a relative who worked for Apple for over ten years about the video drivers and asked specifically if we should be doing our own updates. He said that while it can be done, it is not a good idea and advised strongly against it.
What you might want to do is go to Help > Submit Bug/Feature Request and report this as a bug to the engineers. Give the exact version of your OS (from the Apple menu) and InDesign (from InDesign > Help) so they can work with Apple to make the fix. You might also report this on the Apple forums.
And post the link back here so others can see it.

This has been reported over and over again. I don't have a link handy but a search of the uservoice page will, I'm sure, give you some previous reports.

True--but the drivers are not always to the latest version. understandably, both Apple and Microsoft wait for a while to make sure new bugs are not introduced. They don't want to support the video card companies bugs, since users would tend to blame Apple/Microsoft for any issues. I've seen drivers being more than a year out of date even though the OS was officially up to date.
(Windows updates work basically the same as Apple's updates as far as video drivers are concerned.)

Check your video card driver to make sure it's up to date; go to the video card manufacturer's website--don't go by the Apple OS update.
Try turning off the GPU preference if it's on to see if it makes any difference. If it does, it's probably a video card driver issue.

This is a known issue with GPU Performance. Turn it off and don't hold your breath waiting for it to get fixed.
That feature has been a problem for years.
