getting emtpy frames when placing image files

Hi

I know this sounds very basic but I can't figure out why I'm getting an empty frame only when placing (Cmd+D) an image file (jpg). When the cursor is loaded with the image file, the preview looks fine, but as soon as I click on the pasteboard, an anchored frame is created, but it's empty:

How make the image visible?
