Grey boxes in place of Placed files

I was resizing a placed image into my indesign file and I must have clicked some weird shortcut and can't back up this function. All the placed items in my file turned to grey boxes so you can not see the image or vector that was placed. However if I export it, it exports them correctly. I need to see them in the file to move and resize them but I can't figure out what I hit to get these grey boxes.  I'm on a pc I was hold shift control and Alt while resizing.

Supporting Aman's correct answer, I wrote this up for my students a few years ago (still the same for current versions). Knowing that you did this by accident via a shortcut and that all images are impacted, start in the View menu. But this article explains that Display Performance controls live in three separate locations in InDesign: Preferences, View menu and Object menu, and why.

    Hey there,

I have the same problem and tried all the solutions by changing the display performance, but it doesn't help. Some images come back, but some leave black, blank or grey. This is with all my InDesign files, and I work with them all, this is very frustrating. If I place that image again, it shows up, but this would be a disaster to replace all the files. This happened after I updated my iOS to Catalina. Any ideas? Thanks

Thanks all! When I re opened today the images were back but your link was very helpful, if my fingers slip in the future I'll know what I did. Thanks Barb

    Hi,

Can you add screenshots? What is the OS?

Is the Display performance set to "Fast Display"?
