I have a very strange problem. I created guides in the template of my document, and everything was fine until I inserted a new page and discovered that the new page and page beside it didn't have the guides visible. I thought I was using the wrong template page, but it's the same one as the rest of the document. Scrolling through my document, some of the pages show the guides now, others don't (they all showed the guides before). And when I try and create new guides, the pages that show the guides are fine, but the pages that don't show the guides, the new guide disappears as soon as I try to place it.
It is truly bizarre. I've restarted my computer, but the problem persists.
You might also try deleting your InDesign cache files (which is not the same as deleting preferences). This can be helpful in fixing problems within the interface but it seems worth a try here.
To do so:
For Macintosh Users: The User Library folder in which InDesign’s cache files are stored is hidden by default on most Macintoshes. To access it make sure that InDesign is closed and click on the desktop to launch a Finder Window (Command-N).With this window in column view follow the path User>Home folder (it’s the folder with an icon that looks like a house—it may have the user’s name rather than “Home”) and click on the Home folder. With the Option Key pressed choose Library from the Finder Go Menu. “Library” will now appear within the Home folder. Within the Library folder find the “Caches” folder. Within the Caches folder find and delete the entire folder “Adobe InDesign”. I find that deleting the InDesign cache folder completely leads to a lasting change.
For Windows Users: On Windows 7 and above the caches files are hidden. To find them go to the Control Panel and open Folder Options and then click the View tab. Then select “Show hidden files and folders” or “Show hidden files, folders or drive options” in Advanced Settings. Then delete (or rename) the folder at the end of this path: C:\Users\[User Name]\AppData\Local\Adobe\InDesign\Version [#]\<Language>\Cache.
They are all from the same Master Page. I even changed the Master Page and then changed it back but that didn't help.
On the pages where the template guides aren't visible, I can't set guides. Sometimes they show up when I'm pulling them from the ruler, but they disappear when I try and place them (release). Sometimes they don't even show up at all on the top, but will on the side (but still disappear when I place it). And now even the pages that SHOW the guides have that problem.
