help understanding how the bookwrite plugin works

I think you mean Blurb BookWrite and looking at the Blurb website it sounds like it's a stand-alone book creating application, i.e. not an InDesign plug-in. I suggest you check the position with Blurb.

They do appear to have an InDesign plug-in but that's not BookWrite. you would need to know InDesign to use it:
