How an autopage number manifests

While iterating through a character stream (collection) in let's say a text frame on the second page of chapter 2 of an InDesign document; I come upon an auto_page_number character (0x18).

Can I find the characters actually displayed in this character's place -- in this case "2-2" -- with a script; or must I re-derive the "2-2" by looking at the current numbering preferences?

In other words - is there a accessible 'displayPageNumber' for a Page?

Thanks.

page.name should get you there in most cases.

That works okay for master pages; but not the actual document pages.
