How do I create a Master page and number pages after I have several pages in a document and also, when I start a new document?  I have never made a master page.

EACH PAGE # LOOKED LIKE THIS:  1.   1

    Hi sandrar69784876,

It looks like you put 2 items on your Master Page:

    • you typed a number 1,
    • and also inserted the page number marker.

Just insert the page number marker, nothing else unless you want wording like "Page" before the page number.

So, draw a text frame, right-click in it, and select Insert Special Character / Marker / Current Page Number  as shown above in the screen capture. It will look like a capital letter A on the master page, but that's ok. It just represents what will be the real page number on your document pages.

The video above is good: InDesign Training : How to Add Page Numbering in Adobe InDesign CS5 - YouTube  and you can search YouTube for more videos on how to do this.

    JONATHAN

I WENT OVER AND OVER IT. GOT IT TO NUMBER THE PAGES. EACH PAGE #

LOOKED LIKE THIS: 1. 1 ETC. I CANCELED ALL THE NUMBERS AND WENT

BACK TO MY DOCUMENT AFTER CLOSING IT AND NOT SAVING CHANGES. I MADE A

TEXT BOX TO ADD SOME TEXT THAT I HAD COPIED FROM SOMETHING AND WHEN I

PASTED IT, IT HAD A NUMBER 1. BEFORE THE BEGINNING OF THE TEXT. I

CLOSED THE DOCUMENT AGAIN AND TYPED THE TEXT. STILL THE NUMBER 1.

NEXT TO IT. SO, HOW DO I GET RID OF THE NUMBER FROM APPEARING EACH

TIME I MAKE A TEXT BOX TO ADD SOMETHING TO MY DOCUMENT?

Your document already has a master page; it's at the top of your pages pallet, and it applied automatically to any pages you create.

To add content to the master page, click on it. To make sure that your numbers are not hidden by content on your main pages, make a new layer above existing ones, and add your page numbers there.

The page number marker is in the Text Menu. Have your cursor in a text box when you choose it. On your master page, it will appear as the master letter (A in this case), but will show the correct page number on your document pages.
