How do I deselect a text box while other objects remain selected?

Hi, years ago you could:

  • Hold shift and select multiple objects
  • Then hold down command to deselect a text box
  • The objects that remained selected could be moved or nudged at once without affecting the text box

I haven't been able to figure out how to do that. In the screen shot, you can see an example. I'd like to nudge down all of the highlighted rule lines—but first I want to deselect the text box on top of them.

Does anyone know how I could do that?

It can sometimes be a lot easier to select things in the Layers panel.

Shift+click on what you want to select in the Layers panel (you click on the little box to the right), and Ctrl+Shift+Click if you want to deselect something.

That's where it's going wrong...just stay with Shift, per Barb's reply. I don't know if it ever worked that way with Command, but I do know it always did with Shift.
