I have a shape (just a big rectangle) at the bottom of page 1 of my document. I want it to spread down to the top of page 2 so when people are scrolling through the document one page just transitions to the next. I know there's a way to do this because I did it by accident once already (see screenshot). I believe what I did was add page 2 to the spread and then use the Page Tool to drag it below instead of to the side.
However, when I try to do it again with page 3, I get this weird effect. When I try to drag page 3 below, it just turns blank. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong or how I even made it work the first time.

You need to copy it from page 1 and paste in place on page 2.

So what I want is for the green block to start at the bottom of page 2 and continue on to the top of page 3. When I try to copy it and paste in place, it pastes it into basically a random location. I just want one object to span two pages. The effect below is just one object. I don't want to have to mess around with two separate objects and trying to line them up correctly so it looks like they're seamless.

Make sure the document is set up as single pages, not spreads. And you have no choice here. You cannot use one object on two spreads.

I just played around with it a bit and I'm not sure what I was thinking but paste in place won't work. You're going to have to move things around to line them up but it's not that difficult. But again, no way to do this with one object.

What (reader) format is this for?

I figured it out. Add page to the spread and use Page Tool to drag the page wherever it's supposed to go (in this case, below the previous page). It'll turn blank, then just use the Selection Tool to select all the content that was left behind and drag it back onto the page (toggling Normal Screen Mode helps with this).

Sounds as if you're creating an alternate spread, which allows ID to treat adjoining pages as one for export purposes. That would be the right approach.
