How do I put chapter and sub chapter numbering at top of page
I have typset a large book of 500 pages.
Client would like the numbering of the chapters and sub-chapters at the top of each page.
Is there a script or other method to do this?

For the chapter numbering to work each chapter has to be a separate file compiled into a book using the File>New>Book
Chapter numbering doesn't work outside of this.
To put running heads - you'd have to insert Text Variables as per @Robert at ID-Tasker
You can get creative with them.
For example if your text is
Chapter 1 - The Beginning
but you only want Chapter 1 on the left
Apply a character style to the Chapter 1 2 3 etc. for that text - you can search and apply with GREP for the heading style and apply the character style
Then the running header variable would be for Chapter Numbers - and pick that character style and only this Character Style appears in that area.
