Dear Sir,

    Exporting a selection:

    1. select some text
    2. go File > Export > choose the desired format (RTF, text only or tagged text...)

Exporting a story (meaning all the text placed in a text frame or in threaded frames):

    1. just place the cursor anywhere in the text, without selecting anything
    2. go File > Export > choose the desired format (RTF, text only or tagged text...)

    Exporting all text:

    1. Window > Utilities > Script > run "Exportallstories" script.
    2. Choose desired format and set location. Be aware this script will create a different text file for each story. This can be a hassle if your document has many many stories...

In my experience, Acrobat's Export to Word function does a much better job than ID, particularly for complex multi-storied layouts. In a standard layout, exporting from ID may give you dozens of discrete tiny files. Piecing them together is a ridiculous task.

There's a Rorohiko plug-in that does a better job than ID alone, but Acrobat seems to do a great job and maintains layout surprisingly well.
