How to jump back to Selection Tool after Hand Tool

Hello, I'm new to InDesign. Having worked with Illustrator for years, I cannot get quite used to InDesign's controls.

My question here is about the Selection Tool. It seems that whenever I use the Selection Tool and then hold the space bar to move around via the Hand Tool, InDesign doesn't return to the Selection Tool but is now on the Direct Selection Tool. In Illustrator, after moving around (with the Hand Tool) I'm automatically back to the Selection Tool which is what I want here, too.

Is something wrong with my settings or is there a way to change the behavior? Because work is not very intuitive right now when I always have to hit V or select the Selection Tool from the Tool Bar again and again.   

This is Indesign CS5.5 by the way.

    Hi Issey:

    The good news is that CS5.5 is still working for you. What operating system are you on? If you are using such an old application on a current operating system, and that's the worst issue you encounter, that sounds pretty good.

    I can only test as far back as CS6, but when I press Spacebar to pan around the image, and then release it, it returns me to the Selection tool (and not the Direct Selection tool).

    Hi Barb,

    Thanks for your reply. I recently upgraded to macOS High Sierra, but the problem existed on Mountain Lion before. Yep, other than that, it's still running.

    So, from what you say I infer that my tools' behavior is abnormal... that gives me some solace thinking that my next version of InDesign won't annoy me with it.
    If there is any code or setting that I could change to remedy the behavior, I would be happy to try... anybody savvy here?

    I still have a copy of 5.5 on my High Sierra Mac, and it doesn't do what you describe. As a work-around, if you hold the Command key and click anywhere, you can tap the V key to get to the direct select tool (V is the shortcut). Hope that helps until you find a better answer.
