How to place photoshop files into an indesign file?

I am making a calendar and I am putting my own illustrator artwork and photoshop images into it. When I hit File > Place in Indesign, oddly enough, none of my photoshop files even appear in the list of things to place despite them all being right on my desktop. Is there something that I am missing or is this just not possible? Any help would be appreciated.

Doesn't sound like you're missing anything. InDesign can place a wide variety of file formats. Even if they're not compatible, you should still see them as grayed out. Are you certain you're looking in the right folder? Another way to place is to drag the file from your Finder window/Explorer window and drop the image on top of your document. See if that method works for you.

9 out of 10 times not Place is chosen but Open, and that fails of course.

That’s a really good point Frans and that would make sense. I didn’t consider that since the OP implicitly stated that they were choosing Place. It’s definitely possible!

The calendar is all set up and is otherwise finished aside from placing the photoshop files. And yes I am looking in the right folder when I select place, it always defaults to looking at downloads first but I know to switch it to the desktop. No photoshop files are appearing in any location(simply not even appearing as an option, they are not grayed out) despite the fact that if you try to find them anywhere else like in finder, they are there as they should be.

Have you tried dragging and dropping to the document from a Finder window?

You realise InDesign won't look in your desktop unless you tell it to?

Quick note…on Windows, you will not see incompatible files. That’s a Mac thing.

Good point Bob. So if the OP is using Windows (which we don't know if they are or are not), when placing the images, make sure that you choose "All Readable Files" or "All Compatible Files" (not sure the exact wording), from the drop-down menu in the Place dialog box.

Have you set up an InDesign document first?
