How to start a new section (or chapter) on the same page and restart footnotes with each chapter?

I am setting a single book of the Bible. The text, in this case, must be set in two columns, with footnotes in one column at the bottom of the page. Convention for books of the Bible are that each chapter continues on the same page/column as the previous chapter since chapters are typically only one or two pages. The text is imported from Microsoft Word, in which each chapter had been set to begin a new Section, and the footnotes started numbering at 1 in each chapter. However, when pasting this text from Word to InDesign, the footnote numbering is continuous from one chapter to the next, meaning that the Section divisions in Word did not transfer to InDesign. I need the footnotes that accompany the scripture text to start numbering a 1 at the beginning of each chapter, and each chapter must continue on the page following the end of the previous chapter. I've explored InDesign menus and Support Community discussions for solutions. I have learned that, in InDesign, sections always start a new page. In one thread, a workaround of starting a new text frame is offered, but since working with two columns, starting a next text frame would divide both columns, not just the single column in which the new chapter begins.

I have tried to manually renumber the footnote references in the text by selecting the reference number in the text and overtyping number "1". This deletes the footnote and the "new" reference number "1" does not appear in the footnotes section at all, indicating that the manually corrected footnote reference in the text is no longer seen as a footnote reference by InDesign. Additionally, I have tried adding a footnote using Type/Insert Footnote. It adds a footnote reference of the next consecutive number following the one that is already inserted int the text. So now I have two footnote references in the text; at that bottom of the page I have the existing footnote and a new reference number at the bottom of the page awaiting text to the added. I then tried to manually renumber the newly inserted reference number in the text with "1", hoping that I could then copy the text from the misnumbered footnote into the new "1" footnote. Again, when I manually change the reference to "1", the reference disappears from the bottom of the page, indicating that InDesign no longer sees it as a footnote reference.

Sincerely, Jonathan

What @Mike Witherell said.

Your options are to hide the footnote numbers (make them transparent, and 1% width) and type fake footnote numbers next to them. In the footnotes themselves, it is possible to delete the numbers, so just delete them and type the number that you need.

Of course, the major disadvantage here is if you need to insert or delete a footnote, since everything will need to be renumbered manually (at least until the end of the chapter).

Alternatively, you could consider an add-on like my (not free) Footwork - Id-Extras.com

This will allow you to number the footnotes however you like.

The disadvantage, though, is that it is not "live" – if you make a change to the layout you will need to rerun Footwork to get the footnotes synced on the right page again.

Hi @28316014:

By "footnote caller" do you mean the note number in the footnote? Do you need all of them to disappear? If yes, use a nested style to target the numbers (through the separator) and set them to transparent/tiny with a character style. What are you using as the separator between the number and the note itself? If a tab, for example, set the nested style to assign the character style through the first tab character.

Thank you for pointing me to nested styles, @Barb Binder! That approach looks very promising.…

@TᴀW  or @Mike Witherell,

Do you know how one can systematically select or search for the footnote callers that appear at the start of the footnotes? I have hundreds of them to hide or delete, in favor of my own. Of course I'd prefer to do that operation globally if possible. But the footnote caller doesn't have an assigned character style, and it's not listed as a special character to search for. So I can't figure out how to specify it. Yet it must have some unique identifier!

P.S. I'm considering Footwork, although I hesitate because I foresee using it for only one project. (I'm not a professional typesetter.) It looks impressive.

InDesign footnotes numbering can be set to restart per the page, spread, or section (of pages), but it has no provision for restarting within the same page.
