How to stop the Selection Tool from turning into the Direct Tool

This has annoyed me for years. How can I lock the Select Tool? Everytime I choose the select tool, then go to move an object it turns into the Direct Select Tool and moves the image inside the image box instead of moving the image box as a whole.

This is beyond annoying. When I choose the Select Tool I want it to stay the Select Tool.

My guess is you are probably putting the cursor in the center of the frame, triggering the content grabber (donut). If this is the case, you can turn that nasty thing off under View > Extras > Hide Content Grabber.

If that is not the problem, be sure you aren't accidentally double-clicking in the frame. That will cycle between select and direct select tools.

If you want the content grabber, you need to be careful to stay away from the center when trying to move a frame.
