How to turn off automatic font activation

Community Beginner ,
Aug 12, 2020 Aug 12, 2020

A week or so ago I accidentally clicked a button to allow Indesign (or Adobe?) to automatically activate fonts that are missing from a document. I can't find where to turn this feature off.

Cheers, Mike

Finally stumbled across the location of preference for "Auto-activate Adobe Fonts". It's in preferences/File Handling.

No, what ended up working was completely deleted Interstate from the list in Adobe Cloud Fonts rather than just making it inactive. Then restarting everything and it seemed to work then.

It seemed to be a bug with Adobe Cloud Fonts wanting to use their version of the font even with auto-activation unchecked - so removing it from my Adobe Type list completely made it work. At least, thats what I think made it work. I thought I had DELETED it before, but I think I just inactivated it.

Hi @gcc36773400,

Thanks for jumping in and sharing your experience. I know it can be really frustrating when fonts keep auto-activating and unexpectedly adding new fonts to your system.

To turn off this behavior, you can go to InDesign preferences and look under File Handling. There you will find the option for Auto-activate Adobe Fonts. Make sure to uncheck it. This should stop InDesign from automatically activating missing fonts from Adobe Fonts.

If the issue persists, it could also help to remove specific fonts completely from your Adobe Fonts list rather than just making them inactive, as some users have found this solves unexpected activation.

Could you also let me know which version of InDesign and operating system you are using?

Looking forward to your update.

Abhishek
