How to use furigana or ruby in inDesign?

Community Beginner ,
Sep 30, 2020 Sep 30, 2020

Hello, anyone knows how to implement furigana or ruby in an indesign document? I've read in other posts to download the japanese CC version¿? Does that works? In any case, I don't think it's useful at all, cause I just need to use furigana for ONE PROJECT...

I'm starting to think I'll have to implement by hand every furigana caracter... :'''(

Thanks,

Hi Alba,

indeed, all features of the Japanese version of InDesign.

To access them for Japanese typesetting you need the Japanese version or a at least a document from the Japanese version where the setup is already done. If a Japanese document is opened in an English international version only scripting or some special plug-ins would provide control over the specific Japanese features.

FWIW: However, you could try to "simulate" or "fake" them, but I'm convinced that a Japanese customer could see the difference. So: Talk to your customer first, before you procede.

Finally I found this article by Dr Ken Lunde with some suggestions to get Japanese features with an English InDesign 2020. Did not test anything, but it is looking promising:

Japanese/CJK Functionality + English UI—Redux

Hello again!

I've tried the Dr. Ken Lunde tip and it works. At least to change the UI interface. Now the problem is that even introducing the ruby text within the correct panel (now that I have that option), it does not show on. Maybe it's beacuse I have the spanish UI instead of the english one?
Besides, when I try to expand the character panel, indesign closes immediately. I don't know what to do next.

Thanks for your quick answer,

Alba,

Hi Alba,

thank you for testing my suggestion.

Hm. That obviously did not work for you.

Before you doing anything else revert back to your "old" version of InDesign 2020.

Hope, that uninstalling and reinstalling InDesign will do this for you.

For now I'm out of ideas.

Installing the Japanese version would be an option, but then you'll get the Japanese interface with Japanese menus.
