Hyperlinks are lost when placing one InDesign file into another

Community Beginner ,
Feb 08, 2024 Feb 08, 2024

Hi,

I'm having an issue with hyperlinks. My indesign version si 19.0

I have a indd document "A". In this document "A", I import another indd document "B".

This imported indd document "B" contains hyperlinks wich work perfectly : 2 URLs and 1 phone number.

I dont see them in the indd document "A". They seem to be lost.

Please any help ?

That's how it works. Interactivity does not come along for the ride.

Thanks, but... It used to work previously. I have examples where it worked. So ?

Placed INDD file is like any other placed file - it's a separate entity and its contents isn't a direct part of the document it's placed in.

Of course, its contents will be integrated in the finall PDF.

Can you share some example files?

INDD A + B + PDF you've exported.

Allow me to respond to your threat: Placed .indd files inside another .indd file behaves as static artwork only.

Thanks!

I'm OK with this, but why did it work previously? Just a very lucky random? Or did this feature vanish with a version update?

Or --mabye-- is there another way of cascading an indd file inside another one and still keep the hyperlinks?

Placed .indd files inside another .indd file behaves as static artwork only. This behavior has always been the same.

That shouldn't stop you from building/copy/pasting the hyperlink from the embedded indd file into a layer on top of the placed artwork layer.

Mike

This is weird. It used to work for plenty of documents I created for years! I can't understand this.

Did they show up in the hyperlinks panel or did the hyperlinks get auto-detected by a PDF reader?

Since I cant reproduce the fact now, I cant tell if they were in the hyperlink panel. I just saw it stopped to work when I used more than 1 link, this morning. So far, the only PDF reader I used to check was AdobeReader.

They never auto-imported from placed object.

Maybe you've been using some tool to copy them? Scripting something like this wouldn't be a big deal.

Hyperlinks will work in the finall PDF - but they are not auto-magically imported to the "parent" INDD file.
