Image 'noise' or gray on saved Indesign files

I've started 'losing' my images on saved files.  It's fine as a work on a document over a period of days but it seems to happen after I've archived it to an external hard drive.  If I need to call that file up again, even after a period of a few weeks I get this 'noise' in the image frame and the tiny pic in the top corner. Or the frame is greyed out completely. I've posted a screen shot as it's probably the best way to show what's happening. The link is telling me that the image is still connected. I've looked at the display preferences on my Mac and the display performance is set to high quality. I'm not that technical but I don't know why it's suddenly started or how to fix it.

Disable GPU Performance and make sure you're fully updated to 17.3.

Thanks - but  I am running 17.3 and in GPU performance preferences it says Compatible GPU and Monitor not detected, therefore the GPu Performance and Animated Zoom boxes are greyed out. So I can't disable or enable

Try resetting the InDesign preferences to see if that sorts the issue out.

Could be a damaged file, did you try saving it as .idml and then open that .idml and resave it as .indd?

I've tried that but the images are totally lost. I've just noticed that the affected file is being opened by Indesign as a 'read only' file. Could that be part of the problem? I've noticed that something similar has been an issue for other readers. I've not changed the settings, the file is set to read and write but it's opening as a 'read only' and I can't seem to change it

What happens if you copy it back to the local hard drive? This seems like a network (possibly permissions) issue of some sort.

Like Dereck said try resetting the InDesign preferences. I would also shut down the programs and reboot computer.
