Question

Images jaggy and pixilated in when exporting (and viewing ) in InDesign.

Hi All,

I'm having an ongoing issue with linked PSD files looking jaggy and pixilated in InDesign. They actually look jaggy in the InDesign interface. Sometimes if I try and relink them, they'll look better, sometimes not. My display preferences are set to high resolution.

Wether or not they look good when I save them out to different file fomats is a crapshoot. For this particular image, it looks great when saved in PDF format, but jaggy when saved as max quality 300 ppi PNG. Sometimes I have issues with the jaggyness carrying over into PDFs. It's tedious because I feel like I have to quadrupul check all of the images (and sometimes I'm saving out dozens at a time). For some of the images, I've tried setting them to rediculously high PPI in Photoshop (using super zoom), but that doesn't seem to effect what I see and save out in InDesign. Very large files might even make it worse... I suspect there is a loading issue....

I have a Mac with an M2 max chip and 32 GB of unified memory running Sonoma 14.5

Any thoughts?

Attached are screenshots of a good looking image in Photoshop, how it displays/ saves out as a PNG and some of my current settings.

What about your monitor itself? How many native pixels at what physical monitor size?

I'm sorry to hear about the ongoing issues with jaggy and pixelated images in InDesign. It sounds incredibly frustrating, especially when dealing with multiple images and formats.

In addition to the suggestions from other experts, could you try switching between GPU and CPU preview to see if the pixelation and jagginess disappear? Sometimes, this can make a difference in how images are displayed.

Also, are you using an external monitor with your Mac? If so, please provide its specs and resolution. This information might help us diagnose the issue more accurately. Thank you!

Best,

Thanks all! I restarted my computer- no change (this has been happeing for a few months, so it doesn't seem like a transient issue). I changed the CPU/ GPU preview and restarted InDesign- no change. I tried shutting down most of my programs to preserve memory (I typically have AI, INDD, PS and sometime Premier Running all at the same time)- no change. I deleted all of the links in this document except for the problematic one- no change.

I have 32 GB of unified memory and an M2 Max chip. I don't use an external monitor.

So it’s happening with just one link?

Have you tried resetting your caches & preferences, and exporting the documant as an IDML and reopening?

Any thoughts?

Hi @EvryCreative , Have you tried restarting your computer? All placed links are previewed with a proxy preview, which doesn’t affect the output or export. It does look like you are getting the Typical Display Performance even with High Quality selected, and I have seen that happen when memory is short. How much RAM are you running, and how many links are in the document?

Do you have Display Quality set to 'High Quality Display,' and are you clearing the object level settings for images?
