In Design CC keeps crashing when performing data merge operation. I tried deleting preferences and it works for 2 data merge operations and then started crashing again. I have sent a couple of dozen crash reports and no response. Not sure what sending a crash report even does.

Try uninstalling and reinstalling InDesign in the following manner:

In the app section of your Creative Cloud desktop app click on the “V” next to the app’s (InDesign) name and choose the “Uninstall” option from the pull-down menu that appears. After you’ve run the uninstall then use the Creative Cloud Cleaner Tool Use the Creative Cloud Cleaner Tool to solve installation problems  . Then reinstall the program through the Desktop app. Before you reinstall, once again trash all preference files to make sure that your install is completely clean. Then launch InDesign and see if the problem persists.

"Before you reinstall, once again trash all preference files to make sure that your install is completely clean."

Where would I find the preferences that should be trashed?

In your original post you said you’d already deleted your preferences. I took that to mean that you knew how to delete them.

Okay, so the "Ctrl", Alt, Shift" buttons on install.  I did discover one thing while looking through the steps in your first post.  When I opened the CC desktop app I noticed 2 In Design apps.  One v 14.0.1 and one below it v 13.1.  Could this be my issue?  Should I delete them both?

The desktop app is showing the versions that are installed on your machine. It is perfectly fine to have both of them, however, I would suggest deleting the preferences for both versions since it is possible that when you installed the later version that you did so with the option to retain previous preferences and settings checked. This option has caused problems for many. It is best that CC 2019 and CC 2018 have their own preference folders.

Hi Mike,

Sorry to hear about this issue. Please follow these steps to reset preferences and let us know if that helps.

For Windows

Close all Adobe applications.

Go to Locations :

C:\Users\user\AppData\Roaming\Adobe

C:\Users\user\AppData\Local\Adobe.

Delete or Rename InDesign folders.

Launch InDesign from CC.

For MAC

Close all Adobe applications.

Close all Adobe applications

Go to Locations:

~/Library/Caches

~/Library/Preferences

Delete or rename Adobe InDesign and com.adobe.indesign

Launch InDesign from the CC

Please note: Resetting preferences will remove all the custom settings and Illustrator will launch with default settings. You can also take a backup of these folders in case you want to.

Regards,

Srishti

Srishti:

Okay I uninstalled In Design and it gave me an option to keep or delete preferences.  I chose delete.  I then performed your steps for deleting the In Design folders.  I then reinstalled In Design.  Now when I start the data merge, In Design crashed before I can finish creating the Data Merge Document.  Before it would crash when I started to print. Now I can't even get that far.

Help,

Well after about 2 hours on a live chat it turns out that the file is too big for In Design.  I cut it in half and it was still to big.  In Design crashed several times while on live chat.

The work around?  I converted the In Design to a Microsoft Word document.  I then ran it as a mail merge process.  It sent 11 different files (500 pages double-sided) to our printer without so much as a hiccup.

Okay...I deleted both version...there was an option to keep or delete preferences.  I chose to delete the preferences.

It ran for 6 data merge operations and then crashed.  See my response to Srishti for further issues.
