Why is it not spellchecking if it's on autocorrect?

You might consider turning the spell-checker on full-time:
Preferences > Spelling > Enable Dynamic Spelling
Turning on auto-correct is a second kind of spell-checker that only auto-corrects while you are keyboarding/typing. As soon as you tap the spacebar/spaceband key, the auto-correct fixes just that word you typed, if it needs to.
I recommend having both turned on full-time.
