Indent Tools Disappear

I'm trying to indent a few lines of text that are already written, but when the text box is active and editable the toolbar looks like this:

The only time indentation options show up is when no text box is active or selected:

Then they're on the far right where I'm used to them being. I know I've used this tool on a pre-made text box before, but not often enough that I can really track when the change happened. What's going on here?

Indent is a paragraph attribute. Click on the Paragraph symbol at the left end of the Control panel to see all the paragraph attributes:

You can also use CTRL+Alt+T to open Paragraph palette and make indents as you wish

Personally - I prefer use CTRL+T (Character) and CTRL+Alt+T (Paragraph) palette instead of top control panel

Hi tiahnant37055672:

To address the "what's happening" part of your question—InDesign will display as many buttons as it can at one time on the Control panel. In the past, you might have seen all of the Character View buttons (the A)  and most of the Paragraph View buttons (the ¶) on a wide screen display. The buttons were enlarged a few versions back to accommodate HiDPI displays, and if you don't have one, you lost buttons.

Here's a tip: you can hide the display of the buttons you never use by clicking the gear icon at the far right of the Control panel and uncheck items you never use, to make room for more of your favorites to appear without having to switch views. (Or go out and buy a wide screen display .)
