InDesign 18.5 icons turned blank after Win 11 service pack update. Tried many steps to resolve. Help

Hi!

'm running Win 11 Pro, and unwittingly installed the latest Feb 2024 Service Pack. Uh-Oh. Caused problems.

At the same time I "upgraded" InDesign 18.5 to 18.5.1. All InDesign icons turned into black white pages.

This is very annoying and I've tried the following already to fix it:

1. Uninstalled all updates from Win 11 that allow uninstallation. (Service pack won't allow itself to be uninstalled unfortunately). Reinstalling OS from scratch is not an option, took me a week last time to get all software setup properly and I can't spend that time.

2. Uninstalled InDesign 18.5.1 and went back to InDesign 18.5.

3. Cleared icons cache

4. Set default programs using the control panel. Switched it to Illustrator, which displayed the icon correctly, but when switched back to Indesign, it went back to blank. I also tried this same thing using the "properties" right click menu, still didn't work.

5. I copied the icons .dll files from the common files location on another computer using the same version of InDesign and replaced them on my computer.

6. I tried many times opening an InDesign file, modifying it and saving it again, or "saving as" and it still didn't work.

Any other ideas?

Try installing InDesign 2024. Other than that, I did have this issue a while back and I had to edit the registry to fix it.

Reinstall seems to be the only good answer. I will note that I have sometimes had icons for reassigned defaults remain blank/wrong until I restarted the system.

@hayleys69485488  We are sorry for the trouble. Please try uninstalling InDesign using the Creative Cloud Cleaner Tool, followed by a reboot. Now, reinstall InDesign and kindly share the outcome.

Vivek

Thanks everyone for your suggestions.

I went ahead and took BobLevine's suggestion and installed InDesign 2024. I don't want to reinstall 2023 because it was so difficult to get it all working properly the first time, on Windows 11 (my usual plugins were a nightmare to make work).

So now I see icons! I guess I will just keep 2024 in the background, and continue using my 2023 version for now, if that's what it takes to have the icons show.
