Since the latest update of InDesign (v 20.0) the following error occurs in certain documents (not all):

If I want to change the margins on certain master pages that I have created via “Layout”-“Margins and Columns”, this does not work.

Immediately after clicking on “Layout”, InDesign hangs up completely, the window with the error report appears & InDesign crashes completely.

Mac platform?

There are A LOT of posts from Mac users with wast range of problems with the latest version of InDesign.

If you don't have time for finding a solution - please downgrade to 2024.

But if you would like to try - you can start from resetting preferences and limiting number of installed fonts.

I'm experiencing the same issue. I can have 9 master pages, but when I add a 10th master page, if I'm on that 10th page and click "Layout" the application crashes.

Hi @erict77615109,

Thanks for reaching out and sharing your experience. To help troubleshoot, could you confirm the operating system you're using? Also, is this issue happening with all files or specific ones?

Please try disabling the Contextual Task Bar (guide: https://adobe.ly/3Z3Ii3A) and see if the crash persists when accessing the "Layout" menu.

Let me know how it goes or if you have any more details to share!

Best,
Abhishek Rao

Hello,

I'm on Ventura 13.4. This happens in multiple files. I tried creating a blank file with 10 blank master pages. Once on the 10th master page, clicking the Layout menu crashes the app. I tried disabling the Contextual Task Bar, but still have the issue.

Before anything else, update your Ventura to its latest version. Up until 13.5, many users had serious issues with InDesign (although not necessarily the one you experience).

I did the following to recreate the error:

1. create a blank InDesign document
2. duplicate the blank, existing master page 3 times
3. On "Master Page D", after clicking on “Layout”, the program crashes.

This is a critical error and should be fixed as soon as possible!

It's not just MAC isers, it started happening to me last week on Windows 10 Pro, I upgraded to Win 11 Pro but the issue remains. If I revert to a previous version then I won't be able to open any of the files I have created in the past week.

@Nij5C0C

You can either export them as IDML - from 2025 - or 2024 should show you a message if you want Adobe to convert them for you.

Hi @Nij5C0C,

I agree with the suggestion made by Robert at ID-Tasker.  Saving files as IDML can help resolve minor file corruptions. If the issue persists, please share a sample file, and I’ll attempt to replicate it on my end.

Regards,

Srishti
