InDesign 2019 (14.0.2) keeps crashing

I'm on Windows 10.

Even when idling, right after opening InDesign, with no documents open, you can see (in Task Manager) InDesign start eating up RAM. Eventually it crashes.

This is the ME version of InDesign, and I installed the latest hotfix to resolve the GREP search bug, but the crashing was happening before that too.

Eventually, after trying to launch ID about 30 times, it works fine for the rest of the day. I think. Hasn't happened today yet that it works, though.

And if you're wondering why I'm bothering to use 2019 when 2018 works fine (... it just crashed again while I was typing this; no docs open, just idling) the answer is that I need the footnotes in table feature.

Have you tried resetting the preferences?

Set preferences in Adobe InDesign

  • (Windows) Start InDesign, and then press Shift+Ctrl+Alt. Click Yes when asked if you want to delete preference files.
  • (Mac OS) While pressing Shift+Option+Command+Control, start InDesign. Click Yes when asked if you want to delete preference files.

I haven't yet. Will try later. Not very hopeful, though. Trashing prefs is somewhat overrated IMHO.

It doesn't always work but trashing preferences does fix a surprising number of weird problems. Good luck.
