InDesign 2020 (15.1.1) crashing when using text-tool on macOS Catalina

Hi there,

I'm trying to run InDesign 2020 (version 15.1.1) on my Mac (macOS 10.15.6) and as soon as I try to draw a text box on a file the whole application closes.

Here are a few things I have deduced from my attempts to resolve it:

  • No file corruption as the issue happens on all files
  • The file type does not matter (both indd and idml crash)
  • Uninstalling and reinstalling did not work
  • Resetting preferences does not work
  • Backdating to a previous available version does not work
  • Deleting the cache and com.adobe. files for InDesign did not work
  • Lauching from terminal does not work
  • Still crashes in safeboot!

Please help if you can!  I have attached the contents of the crash log.

TIA

Hi there,

Sorry about the trouble you are facing with InDesign. When did this start happening? Are there any recent changes made to your system? For example, any antivirus, system updates or web extensions installed recently.

Try login to root account (https://support.apple.com/en-in/HT204012). Check how application works there. If it works fine there, then it could be related to permission errors. Follow these steps to repair permission errors:

  • Go to Terminal (Go Utilities Terminal.app)
  • Execute the following command on terminal to provide permission:
    • sudo chmod -R 777 /Users/<user>/Library/Preferences/Adobe InDesign
    • sudo chmod -R 777 /Users/<user>/Library/Caches/Adobe InDesign
    • sudo chmod -R 777 /Users/<user>/Library/Application Support

If that doesn't help either, then we need to troubleshoot this on a live session. Please head here (https://helpx.adobe.com/support.html) and select the chat button in the lower-right corner of the page. We can help on a live session that way.

I'm having the exact same problem, and also from this morning Indesign is not opening at all anymore.

Try using a different font, maybe it's a font issue

No, this didn't work 😞 it's crashing while I'm trying to create a textbox. I revisited previous documents that worked and clicking on the pre-existing text box yields the same result - the program shuts down.

Did you try to use another font BEFORE drawing the text frame?
