InDesign 2024

I have seemingly upgraded to InDesign 2024. Whatever version I had previously from CC has gone and 2024 is a new application. My file history has been retained on the home page but all files now have to go through the 'Save As' dialog when I open them. Why would they do this?

Hi @Roger Breton ,

to open InDesign 2024 documents in InDesign 2023 you either need an IDMS IDML file from the InDesign 2024 document or you need to use Adobe's own web based conversion service that is available when you are online. Behind the conversion service via web there is an InDesign server present that does the export to IDML for you, picks up the IDML with the right version of InDesign, in your case InDesign 2023, opens the IDML as document and hands that document over to you.

Good question, are they really going to add a working cloud format to the existing version in Feb, or will it be in the next release?

I’m trying to imagine how a cloud version of an InDesign file will work with links and fonts? If a cloud saved pagelayout has gigabytes of linked assets where do the assets live without file syncing, and will the fonts have to be Adobe Type cloud fonts?

Because each version of InDesign uses its own file format. When you open up in InDesign file from an earlier version, you will see the word Converted next to the file name on the document tab. You will need to save it, and either replace it or give it a new name. This way you don't inadvertently override the old version. You have to make a decision.

It's always been this way, by the way.

To your knowledge, can 2024 documents be opened directly using 2023?

Or will I have to export as IDML format?

@Laubender does the conversion service run in the background of the desktop Indesign application, or is it a website that we can visit to convert files? If its a website where can we find it?  I looked around in my account in the Creative Cloud website but couldn't find it and the documentation doesn't explicitly refer to any website.

I expected your answer to be incorporated in the section labeled:

"Save backwards to the previous InDesign version"

Hi @Andy Brack ,

it's not a place you can go to. It's a built in feature of InDesign that contacts an Adobe service on the web. I assume a couple of server machines that run every possible version of InDesign Server.
