Since updating to 2025, we've run into an issue when using the Find/Change window—if we're searching for something that happens to be in overset text, clicking "find" crashes the program. Has anyone else run into this or found a solution? (The file size doesn't matter; it happens on long books and short books alike.)

What platform, OS and InDesign versions?
If Mac - then you should downgrade to 19.5 / 2024.

InDesign 2025, as stated in the title (so 20.0). Mac, Sonoma 14.7 (not totally sure what all my coworkers are on). We need a solution for 2025, as our whole team upgraded and many files have been converted before this bug came to light.

Hi @katieh64658769,
Sorry to hear you're experiencing this issue! In addition to what our expert has asked, could you please confirm if the crash occurs only with a specific file or if it happens across multiple files? Also, have you submitted a crash report for this issue? You can follow the steps to submit a crash report here: [Submit Crash Reports](https://adobe.ly/3YBTzYm).
Additionally, could you share a screen recording demonstrating the issue? This will help us better understand the problem and find a solution.
Thanks!
Abhishek Rao

Hi @katieh64658769,
Thanks for the update and for sharing the screen recording. I tried reproducing the issue on my end, but everything seems to be working fine for me. Could you please confirm if this crash is happening with this particular file or with all files?
Additionally, could you test this in a new InDesign document and let us know if the issue persists? If it is specific to this particular file, could you please share it with us for further testing?
Thanks!
Abhishek Rao

This was a new sample file I created just for the recording; it's happening across users and across files. (2 of us so far are having this problem on every file we try.) The issue persists in new files, old, short, long, etc.

Yes, I can confirm this:
InDesign 2025 crashes when searching for something that happens to be in overset text. Tested on both Ventura and Sequoia.

I'm having the exact same issue with find and replace crashing. But it extends to other things also – just scrolling through a document at speed, moving items and even resizing a picture box, have all caused the same crash.
Multiple documents, some older ones that have been updated to 2025 and some new documents created in 2025.

Hi everyone,
We have been using Adobe InDesign 2025 (20.0) since two weeks ago, and it crashes when using Find/Change on all the documents we are opening. It happens on both Windows OS & Mac OS (Sonoma 14.7.1). We are submitting reports each time InDesign crashes.

Hi @camille_9943,
Thanks for sharing your experience with InDesign 2025. I understand how disruptive crashes can be when working on your documents. I’ve tested the Find/Change functionality on my end, and it seems to be working fine without any crashes.
To assist you better, could you please provide the following information?
Your input will be invaluable in troubleshooting this issue. Thank you for your patience, and I look forward to your response!

Hi again Abhishek,
Thank you for your response!
I wanted to add that the issue doesn't occur consistently during Find/Change actions, which makes it challenging to capture in a screen recording due to its unpredictable nature. While I can share a document, I'm not certain it will be helpful since the crashes are random (though fairly frequent).
Thanks again!

Hi @camille_9943,
Thank you for your quick response! I understand how frustrating it can be when issues are inconsistent and hard to replicate.
If possible, please share the sample document when you can. Even if the crashes are random, having the document might help us identify any patterns or triggers. Additionally, if you notice any specific conditions or actions that seem to precede the crashes, please let me know.
Your feedback is crucial in addressing this issue. Thank you for your cooperation, and I appreciate your patience as we work through this!
Best,
Abhishek Rao

Hello,
Noted, thank you. I’ll share some documents with you once it’s made public in a few weeks, as it’s currently confidential.
Additionally, we've observed that there are extended periods without the issue, followed by phases where it reoccurs frequently within a short timeframe and across multiple documents. This pattern suggests a possible instability. I hope this helps!
Best,
Camille.

My organization is experiencing this issue as well, but it is not specifically crashing for documents that have overset text. I have attached a screenrecording of an example of the crash with a document that has no errors of overset text in the preflight. The crash is happening for simple find/change replacements, and when running GREPS.
1. Are you on Mac or Windows? If Mac, which version?
All team members are functioning on a MacOS Sonoma 14.7.
2. Could you confirm the exact version of InDesign you are using?
All team members are using InDesign v 20.0
3. Is the crashing happening with specific files or across multiple documents?
The crashes are happening across multple different docuements of various sizes.
4. Have you submitted any crash reports? If so, sharing the details could help us track the issue.
We have not been filling out crash reports, but will start to do so moving forward.
I am unable to share a testing docuement. Our organization uses the find/change window dominately to complete changes efficiently. Any suggestions or answers on this is greatly appreciated.

Just in case: are you sure you don't have instances of overset text in text frames on the pasteboard? InDesign's preflight won't flag them.

Apologies, there is also not overset text on the pasteboard of these instances.

Apologies again! We tested this further with other documents and did find instances where overset text was left on the pasteboard. The program would crash when running a find/change with overset text items left in the layout. When those items are deleted, the find/change works properly.

Hi @Haley106EM,
Thanks for your update! It seems that leaving overset text on the pasteboard can indeed trigger crashes during Find/Change actions. To avoid this, ensure all overset text is removed before using the Find/Change feature.
If you encounter further issues, please submit crash reports whenever possible. This information helps us identify and resolve these bugs more effectively. If you have any other questions or need assistance, feel free to reach out!

I'm sorry, but that's not really a solution! The program shouldn't crash just because we have overset text.

Just for the record: the crash happens if the searched text is in overset text anywhere in the document, not only on the pasteboard.

Hi everyone,
I wanted to follow up on the recent discussions regarding the crashes during Find/Change actions in InDesign 2025 when overset text is involved. I’m currently checking in with the product team about this issue and can confirm that I have also been able to reproduce it on my end.
I’ll keep you all updated as soon as I have more information.
Thank you for your patience!
Best,
Abhishek Rao
