InDesign 2025 Lagging on MacBook Air with M3 Chip

Something terrible happened after InDesign upgrade to 2025 version, MacOS's spinning beach ball spins every time the cursor moves, and InDesign is lagging soooo badly (I work on MBA 15” M3, RAM 24GB, macOS Sequoia 15.0.1). Have you experienced something like this? Is there any solution for this?

I found that once I moved my cursor off the area I selected, InDesign responded. So I fixed the problem by Preferences>Interface - deselect 'Highlight Object Under Selection Tool'. It all works fine now. InDesign is no longer slow - Sequoia 15.2 / MacBook Pro M1 Max / 64GB

I had the same problem, Indesign would slow down insanely after a few hours of work, and I had to restart the computer to make it work. For me, the reason was this:
On blank screen go to Edit - Preferences - Type - Enable in-menu font previews - switch off.
Same thing was slowing up Illustrator, also insanely.. Now both programs run as they should.

Same problem... It's becoming very problematic!

Try updating to the very last version, it helped us, 2025 seems to be running a bit more smoothly now. Still a bit wobbly, still the annoying, neverending «hints», still absurd that Type-1-fonts will be switched of, killing thousands of € in font investment, still not sure why they integrate IMAGE AI but not what would actually make sense, e.g.editing and correcting text with ChatGPT/Claude inline, still sometimes crashing w/o any specific reason... but not completely frozen anymore after 10 seconds. PROGRESS! 😉

Hi @HD Schellnack ,

look into Roland Dreger's work as scripter:

OpenAI for Adobe InDesign

For further applications of his scripts look into Project Octopus:

Or see into Eugen Pfüger's MATE for InDesign:

THANKS. This fixed it for me too. I was getting two main lag issues: clicking on any container would not show handles until I moved the cursor again, and page up/page down key operations did not show the change in page until I clicked the selection tool.

I am still dealing with a stuttering InDesign. I have uninstalled and reinstalled InDesign 2025, wiped with Creative Cloud Cleaner, and factory reset my Intel Mac, but nothing has fixed this poor user experience. I only use Adobe fonts and have no other tools or extensions installed.

InDesign, "You suck!"

I think, that I finally solved it. I uninstall other 3rd party font manager. i Now use only Adobe font manager and Mac Standard Fontbook. And voilá now its fully ok. My specs: M2 mac mini, M4 MacbookPro both on system 15.1.1 (24B91)

Hey Martin, great to hear it works for you. But we don't use 3rd party Font Managers... so that would not help us (and 2025 is still frustratingly slow).

Just purchased an iMac, 4 series chip, 32gb, 1T and InDesign is extremely slow. I'm working on a large book file and when I scroll down a few pages it takes the screen several seconds to catch up. The pages window stays white for a while then will visually kick in. Have only had the computer for 4 days. Not sure if this iMac can handle the demands of CS or is it an ID issue? Not happy with the performance of either: the new computer or the 2025 upgrade. My 9 year old desktop and 2024 version was less problematic and efficient.

I bet if you take all the 2025 updates off and reinstall 2024 it will all be good. Had the same problem. Very frustrating.

same with me: Mac mini M2 16gb RAM, indesign 2025 is extremely slow. Preferences are deleted, screen preview switched off, taskbar hidden. But ID 2024 works perfectly.

I am very happy with the Mac OS. All other Adobe Apps – and other vendors' apps – are working as expected, I do not believe Adobe are even following this thread, as it has been well over a month now without comment from them or a solution to the issue. Many years ago I remember this kind of experience with Quark Xpress – when I and many others migrated to Adobe. Adobe needs to know how much designers love and rely on this package, perhaps they will spend some time on it then. However, that being said, I do not need regular updates, I just need the ones they upload to be fully tested.

@wotUwant

By any chance you've Magnet app installed? Turn it off.

Thank you for your message, interesting, but no I do not – unsure why I'd need it to be honest.

is anyone working on this problem, is it adobe or macos side?

while other adobe programs run smoothly, indegin is killing me and unfortunately I have to use it every day unfortunately.

we haven't found a workable solution yet, have we?

The only workable solution if you're having problems is to go back to version 19.5.1. I believe that's what most of the users in this thread did.

Yes have had no other problems since I removed all the 2025 updates from my computer and reinstalled 2024. Everything is working fast and as smoothly as before. There’s something wrong in the 2025 update.

Hope this helps!
