InDesign 2025 (v20.0) crashes upon 'redo'

Hey there ID nerds, I tried to search this online but couldn't find anything on the topic. After updating to the latest 2025 v20.0 version, InDesign crashes everytime I use redo!

The report specifies "EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION" exceptionCode="0xc0000005"

Deleting preferences, unisnstalling reinstalling, updating graphics drivers, windows update, nothing seemed to work. Eventually, I rolled back to v19.5 and that's working as flawlessly as before.

Thought I will post and leave this here so there is a record of this bug/issue somewhere on the planet.

Guys, thank you all for your time and replies. But I finally figured out the issue and successfully resolved it! #Eureka

It was the stupid Adobe Fonts!! I had hundreds of fonts that I used over the years via my account and once I deactivated them all, no more crashes! I don't know whether it was a specific set of fonts or there is some integration issue between Adobe Fonts & ME version of ID 2025, the language barriers and all, but deactivating Adobe Fonts seemed to fix the issue. Go figure 😄

Sorry, posted too soon... running on Windows 11 with Nvidia GeForce 2060 GPU, everything is most-up-to-date as of today.

Happening with InDesign and InCopy as well, there seems to a common engine/file that they share which is causing the issue...

I rather not... I have like 10 programs installed and all set up with my user settings and preferences, I don't want to start over from scratch because of 'one' program not working especially when the older version seems to be working perfectly fine.

I can always keep using the v19.5 until they figure out the issue and releases a fix!

Update:

Just updated on a completely different system... still running latest Win11 but a different GPU, CPU and such. Problem is still hapepning there... so it cannot be system-related, I don't know whether it's because I install the Arabic/Hebrew version but it's definitely an issue across multiple platforms.

By @Kiran Qureshi

that's a welcome detail.

and do you have the same problem with the English version?

you can change the language in Creative Cloud app > Preferences (although I'm not sure if this step is fully sufficient to switch to the English version).

Didn't try... don't intend to. The language preference is universal and I'm afraid it will affect the other programs... not worht the trouble. For now, I'm using v19.5 👍

Is it one file or all files?

If a document is not behaving well then try

File>Export

Choose IDML

Open the IDML in InDesign
Save the file as a new InDesign file with a new name
See if the issue persists.

-----

Another thing to try with a troublesome file

Create a new document with same margins and sizes etc.

Then with the new document open

open your troublesome file

In that file - select all pages and then you can Move Pages and select the new document

See if the issue persists when you move all your pages to the newly created document.

https://helpx.adobe.com/ie/indesign/using/pages-spreads-1.html#:~:text=To%20Shuffle.-,Move%20pages,-...

----

Try resetting your preferences:

Windows: Start InDesign, and then press Shift+Ctrl+Alt. Click Yes when asked if you want to delete preference files.
macOS: While pressing Shift+Option+Command+Control, start InDesign. Click Yes when asked if you want to delete preference files.
A dialog will appear asking to delete the InDesign Preferences, select 'Yes' on this dialog.
Further info and instructions here if needed:
https://helpx.adobe.com/in/indesign/kb/indesign-preferences-support-file-locations.html

-----

As already suggested earlier:
But I doubt it's the application itself - sounds like a corrupt file to me - that's why I think the IDML or move pages option might work.

For anyone else that needs it:

Reinstalling rarely fixes everything - you can do a complete reinstall using the
Creative Cloud Cleaner Tool https://helpx.adobe.com/creative-cloud/kb/cc-cleaner-tool-installation-problems.html

It can be done on app by app preference - so you don't need to reinstall all your apps - just InDeisgn.

Pretty sure you can - never tried or used the Cleaner tool personally - but from the link it looks like you can

Hey Eugene,

As I mentioned easlier, it's not happening only with a particular account, system or file. Happening across multiple systems with completely different users and systems.

The only thing I haven't tried is to install the English version only or using a different account, because I don't want to start messing around with my CC settings.

CC Cleaner won't do any good as well, I installed it as a fresh copy on a different system yesterday, same results. It's not only one system where it's behaving like this. If a file is corrupted, it's from Adobe. They just haven't realised it yet... hence, I posted this here, so someone might look at it and put in the bugs to be fixed for the next release 🙂

I've downloaded Newest version of InDesign here and can undo/redo no problem

Can you share more details or a particular file that is crashing - very hard to troubleshoot and it's not happening for me.

It's not about the files, my friend. I create a brand new file, do a few steps, do Undo and then as soon as I click/press Redo the program crashes. It's happening even in InCopy so it's not specific to ID or ID files.

Happened to my other system as well. Then I installed it on a third system fram scratch (the system never had ID or CC installed before), same error.

I'm installing the ME version as I work with a lot of RTL languages. Did you try with English or ME?

Ah I tried the English version
I'll try the ME version tomorrow.

Undo/redo works in the English version.

@Kiran Qureshi

Too many fonts - especially when you've duplicates installed - can lead to unexpected crashes.

I'm not sure about duplicates tbh, was using these for years, never had any issues. Oh well! with each upgrade comes new issues I guess 🙃
