Just got a new Mac and downloaded InDesign 2024. One thing I need to do is data merges for mailings. The postal font I was using is a Type 1 fonts which Adobe does not support. What font is the best one to use to create Intelligent Mail Barcodes? I will need to use this soon!!!

I use data merge in inDesign for mailings. In fact, a lot of print shops I know of use this method. It often goes hand in hand with marketing, so using Word severely limits us in this aspect. To get a good version of the imb font, you can grab it straight from the usps postal site.

Go to: https://postalpro.usps.com/onecodesolution

Download: uspsFontsNonAFP-1.4.0.zip (font folder, scalable, truetype=USPSIMBStandard.ttf)

You'll use the standard version. I've never used the compact version.

Depends on the type of mailings. A mostly-text, some-formatting, bits-of-art page is probably more efficiently produced in Word, all things considered. But if you're merging highly designed stuff for unique digital printing, ID is probably a better bet. But again, if you don't need ID's composition and output power, it's a bit... messier to use than Word.

Thank you. I will have to look into that.

Am I the only person using InDesign Data Merge for mailings?

Only one is a stretch but I would have to say that it's not exactly the right tool. I'd sooner use Word for such a thing.
